Distance Translation Internship

 

The Center for Arab-West Understanding (CAWU) gives students from around the world the opportunity to independently carry out research projects of their choice on topics relevant to Dialogue Across Borders (DAB). Distance Translation interns will play a key role in the direct-development of content that will help to counter misperceptions that exist due to language and cultural barriers, while also improving their own linguistic abilities from abroad. 

 

 

As a Distance Translation intern your tasks will include, but are not limited to:

 

• Monitoring English, Arabic, French, and other language (online) newspapers and selecting relevant material to be translated and summarized for our database.
• Producing English summary translations of Arabic press articles.
• Making specialized overviews of Arabic press articles on occasions when there is a significant amount of media coverage on a particular topic. 
• Proofreading already translated material for accuracy, meaning, and thoroughness. 
• Ensuring that transliteration and formatting are consistent. 
• Attending DAB events.

 

Required:

• University student or graduate with an educational background in Arabic studies, Middle Eastern studies, English, translation or a related field.
• Ability to read and comprehend Arabic language news articles and other written materials for meaning and factual accuracy in a timely manner. 
• Advanced capability to communicate effectively in both written and spoken English. 
• Capacity to translate material from Modern Standard Arabic to English.
• The ability to simultaneously work on multiple projects in an effective manner.
• A general knowledge of Arab/West and Muslim/Christian relations.

Desired:

• Previous translation experience. However, a natural linguistic talent and eagerness to learn is equally acceptable! 
• Any experience with journalistic or academic writing or editing, whether through former jobs, internships, or a school publication is useful. 
• Prior experience with basic web administrative duties. 
• Experience in the non-governmental, grassroots and/or humanitarian sector is beneficial. 

 

• Applicants must commit to work for at least 3 consecutive months. Those who can commit to a longer internship period will receive priority.
• Applicants must be available to work at least 35 hours per week during weekdays. In-person attendance at the office is mandatory on Sundays and Tuesdays. The Egyptian weekend is Friday and Saturday.

 

• All internships are unpaid. However, the cost of living in Cairo is relatively inexpensive and CAWU can provide the applicant with a letter requesting funding if necessary. Depending on the university there are possibilities for the intern to receive college credit. All interns will receive a recommendation letter after they successfully complete their internship.
• Participation in CAWU and DAB field trips, events such as lectures, workshops, and seminars are expected of interns.
